Dive into the second installment of our “Science for Action: Changing the World in Small Steps” lecture series, with Greg Bell from the Queensland Department of Education shares his journey tackling COVID-19 and indoor air quality in schools, highlighting the lessons learned from taking small but crucial steps.

Greg was tasked with addressing air quality in schools during the pandemic and began by engaging with Lidia Morawska and the team at QUT to learn from solutions implemented in other jurisdictions.
This proactive approach saved millions of dollars for the Department by avoiding the purchase of unnecessary air purifiers. The department installed affordable CO2 sensors to monitor air quality in schools. However, a review revealed that their communication around the project fell short. Realizing the gaps, they brought in indoor air quality experts—only to find that no school in Queensland was free from air quality issues. Greg’s insights, as part of our Science for Action series, underline the importance of effective communication and expert involvement in making impactful changes in indoor air quality.

This lecture took place at the Queensland University of Technology on 18 July 2024.
