A discussion forum titled, “What our children breathe – air quality in educational institutions” took place on the 12 May 2025 at the Lublin University of Technology (LUT), supported by the LUT and The National Centre for Research and Development in Poland. The forum was welcomed by Professor Marzenna Dudzinska (Politechnika Lubelska), and Distinguished Professor Lidia Morawska, QUT (Queensland University of Technology) discussed to topic why by good IAQ is important in our schools. An overview of the discussion points:
▶ 𝗜𝗔𝗤 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗮 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀: external and internal sources, including particulate matter and organic compounds, emissions from humans, as well as the conditions we create for pathogens such as fungi, bacteria and viruses. The effects of poor IAQ are not immediately apparent, but they have very far-reaching consequences for human health and social costs.
▶𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: what the sources of internal and external pollution are, the design of buildings and HVAC systems and how these buildings are operated. This is achievable, we have knowledge about it and technological solutions, but there are no regulations for IAQ. In the case of outdoor air, we have emission and quality standards. However, there are no standards and regulations for IAQ. Therefore, greater awareness of the consequences of indoor pollution is necessary.
