We are delighted to announce that Distinguished Professor Lidia Morawska, Director of the Thrive IAQ Research Centre, has been awarded the prestigious 2024 Australian Institute of Architects Queensland President’s Prize! This highest honour from the Australian Institute of Architects outgoing Queensland Chapter President Russell Hall, recognises Lidia’s outstanding contributions to the Profession of Architecture, particularly in advancing our understanding of indoor air quality, and its crucial role in building design.

We convey our congratulations also, to Lidia’s exceptional fellow recipients Don Hewitt (Architect) and Andrew Reid (Engineer), for their significant achievements.

The award ceremony, hosted by the Australian Institute of Architects and compered by Michael Keniger (former Queensland Government Architect), was attended by distinguished government leaders including the Honourable Jarrod Bleijie MP, Queensland Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning and Industrial Relations; Rebecca Young MP, Assistant Minister to the Deputy Premier and Assistant Minister for Planning, Housing and Better Regulation; Elizabeth Watson-Brown MP; and Queensland Government Architect, Leah Lang.

At this critical moment, as the Queensland Government contends with unique emerging challenges in housing, equity, and climate response, as well as the approaching 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Profession of Architecture stands ready to contribute their unique perspective and expertise. As highlighted during the award ceremony, Architects’ distinctive skills in integrating design thinking, practical knowledge and visionary approaches, positions them to address these complex (and exciting) challenges.

Lidia’s work at Thrive IAQ highlights the pressing need to improve Indoor Air Quality standards in our buildings, including a critical reassessment of Australia’s National Construction Code, and an urgent need for the development of a Standards Australia Australian Standard for Indoor Air Quality. Her research provides the critical evidence required, to highlight how architectural innovation can directly enhance occupant health, wellbeing, and cognitive function.

A close collaboration between Researchers, Architects, Engineers, Scientists, Public Health Professionals, and Policymakers, has never been more important. Together, we can reimagine buildings that not only meet contemporary challenges, but also actively contribute to a healthier, more sustainable future.

Congratulations Lidia Morawska!
