Dive into the second installment of our “Science for Action: Changing the World in Small Steps” lecture series, with Former Premier of Victoria Ted Baillieu discusses the impact of powerful and compelling arguments when engaging with government stakeholders.
Renowned for his ability to offer ‘irresistible advice,’ Ted outlines key strategies for effective advocacy in the policy landscape. He emphasizes the importance of defining your audience and understanding the perspectives of government officials, who may be concerned about financial implications. He presents five steps for delivering irresistible advice:
1. Identify a problem that the audience is unaware of.
2. Explain the personal and governmental consequences of inaction.
3. Present a viable solution.
4. Assure them that addressing the issue will not require significant resources or political capital.
5. Highlight the opportunity for them to become a hero of the movement by taking action.
This lecture took place at the Queensland University of Technology on 18 July 2024.
